Big game meat has become a staple in our life. Even though I grew up on a dairy farm , my Dad and brothers all liked to hunt and coming from a family of nine kids we used the meat to supplement what we raised. It wasn’t until later in life that I learned how much better is was for you than grain fed beef, I just knew that I liked it. We have raised three boys that are all hunters and since wild game is a major part of our diet we have learned different ways to cook it that makes it even better. How it is taken care of in the field makes a huge difference in the quality of the meat and the taste. People that say they don’t like wild game have probably never had the experience of eating a cut of venison that was taken care of properly in the field, seasoned just right and cooked to perfection on a barbecue grill!
A really good knife is one of the most important tools in your pack when you are hunting. Proper field dressing is a necessary step in preserving meat from animals that are harvested in the wild and it is not an easy job.Itmust be done as soon as possible in order to ensure rapid body heat loss, and prevent bacteria from growing on the surface of the carcass. A good knife can make a hard job much easier. I don’t think it’s ever “easy” but a sharp knife can sure make a difference in the degree of difficulty. The type of knife depends a lot on hunter preference but quality is an important factor.
Next to your gun and ammo you need to put a lot of thought into your hunting knife. Don’t ever think just any old knife will do.
